Northern Lights Featuring Jose Carreras

Sissel's voice is at its peak, its very best in this intriguing collection. Obviously, she put a lot of planning and careful thought in the selections. What makes this disc unusual is its mixture of themes. No one sings a love song better than Sissel, and she comes through beautifully in Hallowed Mountains, which she wrote, Hymn to Winter,as well as her duet with Jose Carreras and her signature piece, Sarah's Song, suggesting the reincarnation of her daughter Sarah into Sissel's life. She has featured this selection on several CD's, but I think this is by far her best rendering of it (even better if you can see her perform it on the DVD in which, I believe, Sarah brings a bouquet of flowers to her mother at the end of the concert). On this disc, she also has very religious overtones. In one selection, she takes the part of Jesus's mother watching over her little child in the manger, and in another, she personifies all the evil that crucified Christ. To me, the most dramatic songs are Ready to Go Home and Going Home. Both are about anticipating death, perhaps letting go of this life in anticipation of a better life. "Real life has begun." (Going Home is sung to music from Dvorak's New World Symphony.) My only criticism relative to the CD is that these selections should have been placed back-to-back, as they were performed in concert and are shown on the DVD. I've never heard Sissel in a more lovely voice and in such a varied program. She even makes "do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do" sound lovely. The selections between the CD and DVD vary slightly, so I would suggest purchasing both, but if you opt for only one, I'd recommend the DVD. The overall impact of those 65 minutes will make you glad that you did, did, did, did...etc.

I was most fortunate to have been living in Scandanavia (Denmark) in the mid-seventies when Sissel released her first album. Titled simply, Sissel, the album was compiled of familiar Christmas Carols, most in Norwegian.Sisell's pure angelic voice, that her millions of followers have come to over the decades, delivered her youthful innocent spirit and love into the homes and hearts of families and friends gathered for Yuletid.This first album is long out of print, so it was a huge find to discover this relatively recent (2009) release. I almost passed it by, thinking that it included much of the music included in the DVD of the same name (which includes a number of duets with Jose Carreras). I was relieved to find while listeners get to enjoy one duet, the other 11 well-chosen songs some seasonal, and others from Composers including Bach, Dvorak, and Grieg. All are selections that come straight from Sissel's heart and will no doubt pierce yours if you open it.

I first heard this singer not on "Titanic" but on a cd she recorded with Placido Domingo called Sacred Songs.She sounded very serene and lovely on that and I decided to try something of hers. There are singers I likemuch better, but Sissel is quite good. I have listened to the album a few times and enjoyed it each time. Ido not think it is one I will listen to a lot. It is good, but I have little time and prefer other things. I think it is avery nice album and there is not a single song on it that I do not like. She has a very nice voice that is pleasantto listen to.

I somehow found a YouTube clip of Sissel and was hooked. Sissel is from Norway and sings in a number of languages. She has been around in Europe and Russia for at least 20 years, but was somehow over looked in the American market. I hope that changes for her. This is a great album, but you can't stop at just one. All her albums sound different and I've acquired a number of them and she has her own playlist on my classic IPod that I use in my car.At 69 I find very little new stuff I can handle. Sissel has changed that. There still is great music being produced!Her full name is Sissel Kyrkjebø, but it is just much easier to call her Sissel.Listen to samples on Amazon, but try a YouTube video too. Not only does she have a beautiful voice, but is pretty too. If she ever does a concert in my area, I'll be in line to buy tickets.

Lovely voice and lovely music, but in many says the songs on this CD are very similar, perhaps because they were part of a TV program. Still, the singers are wonderful, and the songs are very pretty.

I REALLY like this CD of Sissel! There are 3-4 songs that I really like! I saw this concert on PBS TV Broadcast and I wanted to get the CD! She has a remarkably beautiful voice and this is the only CD of hers I have so far! I don't listen to it that often and wish there were more songs I liked. It was worth buying just for the songs that I do. So, I would recommend this CD, especially for people hearing her for the first time! It was worth the purchase. :)

Until a few months ago, I had never heard of Sissel. I stumbled across her by way of a Utube video. I was astounded. Her voice possesses an angelic gentleness, a warmth, softness, and emotion that I had never heard before. Over the past 40 years I have listened to many artists but was motivated to buy only a handful of CDs, DVDs, Tapes, etc. The artists were okay, but nothing special. Then, I heard Sissel, and Sissel is special. I have seven of her CDs with more to be ordered. I love them all. Wish I could get a Christmas CD of every solo song she has performed. Also wish I could get many of the songs I have seen on Utube, but have been unable to find on CD or MP3. This lady has an uncomparable gift from God.

Because Sissel has such a lovely voice it is hard to be critical but I must say that I was disappointed with some of the songs., especially the Christmas carol which I didn't expect. I also didn't like the duet with Jose where she sounded like Celine Dion. However, it is a matter of taste and she sings "Going Home" so lovely that it is hard not to cry.

If you have never listened to Sissel you have missed one of the most amazing singers on the planetNorthern Lights is lovely she has a beautiful voice that can sing any song pop..opera...folk...she is truly one talented lady this is a must buy for Sissel fans and for folks who want to listen to a VOICE OF AN ANGEL .......

This was bought for a friend and the time it took to pass on to her she has just opened and played the cd. Unfortunately it only plays the 1st 3 songs. The return window has closed so I am not impressed.

This is the first of two of Sissel's cd's for us to own waiting for the second to arrive, currently out of stock. Everyone should experience the voice of this amazing singer, her voice is totally pure and natural. wondeful!!
