It is an ok book but as said by others do not expect to know how to make hay after reading it. FOr that I do prefer: Small-Scale Haymakingby Spencer Yost.That being said the 2 stars only is coming from the description: "You’ll learn how to choose the right species for your soil, judge hay quality to buy or sell, and determine how many bales your animals need to stay happy, healthy, and energetic."and here an example of what is said in the book:Since different plants (and different varieties of the same plant) grow well or poorly depending on the soil and climate, ask your neighbors, agricultural extension agent, and seed dealers which ones do best in your area before planting a hay field.Hansen, Ann Larkin; (Kindle Locations 44-46).More Information For more information on forage species and varieties suited to your soils and climates, there’s usually no better place to start than with your state’s agricultural extension service website. (Kindle Locations 186-188)...So not exactly everything I need to know on how to select what to plant.

This is possibly one of the best books I’ve read. It’s a treasure. I still am not sure how someone can write so authoritatively, yet with so little pretention and ego. I want to meet her. And I want to track down whatever else Anne Larkin Hansen has written just to bask in her magic, even if it’s something I wouldn’t usually be into, like flower arranging. With this little book, it’s a total bonus if you’re into making hay, of course. She’s special. Read it.

I'm new to this industry and wanted a good beginner book. Now I feel I can at least hold a conversation with the pros and have the basic knowledge necessary for them to take me the rest of the way. If you already poses basic knowledge then this isn't the book for you. A quick read full of info.

Good basic info about how hay is made. The author gives several techniques and shares his own experience and method. All of the most common implements are discussed with descriptions of how each works. One could even say it's written like a kids book but for someone looking to learn how things work, this is great. It's a physically small, short book about making hay. No complaints here.

It's difficult to rate this book. If you know nothing about making hay and are considering making bales on a hobby farm this book is a great introduction. If you are a commercial farmer looking to optimize hay production, you will find this book lacking.

Nice little book, great overview of hay production. Good illustrations, lots of extra resources listed. It gets just detailed enough to get the gist of hay production without reading like a boring textbook.
